Yesterday, many placed photos of loved ones on the altar, in remembrance for All Saints' Day. Rev. Pat, in her sermon, called to mind themes for All Saints' Day and from the Beatitudes, teaching us that we are one in the Spirit of God with our loved ones who have gone on before. Jesus' teachings in the Beatitudes gathered together a vision of Heaven and also what we are to do daily. We are to share His vision of a loving world with all whom we meet.
Come and gather 'round, as scripture comes to life..
You will be lifted up and rewarded.

PASTORAL CARE TEAM to begin. Rev. Pat is putting together a team to visit those who can no longer come to church. You will be trained to bring communion to those at home. Please pray on this and, if called to answer, phone Rev. Pat to volunteer. In this way, many will be reached.
In addition, there are many who would love a call and an invitation to church. We can invite friends to accompany us to church - and take them out for brunch afterward!

This is a time for reflection on Jesus’ teachings and how we model our faith to family, friends and all whom we meet. God’s Word guides such a process. Much food for thought and often refreshments to share. The study is of the Gospel Lesson for next Sunday, found below.

Jesus, we never know when you will come again. Help us as we visit those in
prison and jail to remember that we must act every day as though we are to meet you face to face that night. Help us to remember that these are our brothers and sisters and help us to bring them the good news that there is a place for them in your Church and later on in your Heaven. We pray today especially for Step by Step of Rochester as they welcome Margie Mayk back to work.

With autumn providing so much wonderful produce, here is a recipe for a savory Mushroom
Barley Risotto. [We can also make extra for someone.]
Mushroom Barley Risotto
Yield: 4 servings
Prep Time: 15 minutes | Cook Time: 45 minutes
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 cup chopped yellow onion
12 ounces cleaned and sliced crimini mushrooms
3 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
1 tablespoon chopped fresh thyme
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 cup pearl barley
6 cups vegetable broth
1 tablespoon unsalted butter
½ cup parmesan cheese, shredded
1. Heat the olive oil in a large, heavy-bottomed saucepan over medium heat. Saute onion until it starts to brown, about 5 minutes.
2. Add the mushrooms and saute until they have released all of their liquid and are golden brown, about 10 minutes. You can add 1 to 3 tablespoons of water if they start to stick.
3. Stir in the herbs and garlic, then add the barley and stir to coat for 1 minute. Add 4 cups of the broth and bring to a boil over high heat.
4. Cook for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until most of the liquid is absorbed. Reduce the heat to medium and add more broth, ½ cup at a time, stirring until each addition is absorbed, until the barley is tender but still slightly firm. You may not use all of the broth, but you will use most of it.
5. Remove the pan from the heat and add the butter and cheese, stirring until incorporated. Season with salt and pepper, to taste.

Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers, and on my return I would have received what was my own with interest. For to all those who have, more will be given, and they will have an abundance; but from those who have nothing, even what they have will be taken away. As for this worthless slave, throw him into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Celebration of the Ascension
On this coming Sunday, June 5 we as a congregation will celebrate the Feast of the Ascension, which is our name day. Therefore, the readings will be different.
Last reminder - This coming Saturday- June 4th at 11AM - Barbara Robson Memorial Service
Please accept this invitation to honor Barb in a celebration of her life and ministries. She and her sister Sally were parishoners whom we greatly miss. Barb died in Florida in late 2010. It will be a time to lift up her many accomplishments among us, as a friend and dedicated leader for so many years. The Rev. Miriam Owens will co-celebrate with The Rev. Pat Cashman. Reception in Library following.

Here is an update of the health of Don Taylor's friend, Joe Interlicchia, who is the significant other of his daughter, Georgia. Joe is still seriously ill in Strong Memorial Hosp, but underwent a successful surgery today dealing with one of his health issues. I would ask you to add Joe to your daily prayers, please, for strength, healing and recovery to health.

Ascension Update

Yesterday, Rev. Pat preached on themes of Memorial Day, a Holy Day for America. She declared that that God takes us from fear and sorrow to thanksgiving and joy. We know that God is with each of us as a person, and also as a nation - and that He will always guide us. Please say a prayer for Pat this week as she drives her rental truck north from PA to complete the move to Rochester and Ascension!
We are off to a fine start with Rev. Pat.

There will be two events on Sunday, June 12 featuring the new Eucharistic setting by Karen Noble
Hanson, Canon and CIO of the Episcopal Diocese of Rochester.
*The Eucharist at Christ Church Rochester, at 141 East Avenue at Gibbs will start at 10:45
a.m. All are welcome. The Jazz Group includes Trombonist Greg Lecewicz and his Metro Connection Jazz
Group from Sarasota, Florida (by way of Poland), Rochesterians Geoff Smith (Bass), Mike
Van Allen, (keyboard), Jennifer Tierre (vocalist) and Sarasota residents, Chuck
Par, (percussion), Jim Earp (Trumpet) and Tom Ellison (sax, reeds), formerly
from Rochester. Presented in Sarasota, Florida in February, the setting includes
the "Creed", Sanctus, Agnus Dei, Lord's Prayer, Gloria and several other pieces.
The Creed has been sung throughout the Unitred States, including Trinity Wall Street in the Easter
season of 2010.
*Later that day, the music of the setting will be the basis of a Jazz Concert at St. Paul's Church, 25 Westminster Road at East Avenue at 3:45 PM. This concert will also include traditional Jazz.

Bowmiller Rd BBQ Ribs
Ingredients
2-3 racks of baby ribs with ~12 ribs/rack [BJ's are good - look for lean - and usually 3-to-a-pak]
Around 4-6 oz cider vinegar
Pork Rub [or use = a shake of garlic powder, onion powder, ground black pepper and paprika]
Fistful brown sugar for each rib rack
18 oz jar BBQ sauce - your choice; smoky works well. Some of this will be for the ribs when served.
Plenty of heavy duty aluminum foil
Directions
Remove silver skin membrane from back of ribs, if present [work loose with a spoon, put fingers under and lift/peel off]
Line 12" x 18" baking pan/cookie baking tray with long/wide HD foil so you can wrap ribs
Put ribs meat meat side up into baking pan
Sprinkle liberally with vinegar, but no need to drown...
Sprinkle both sides with pork rub and pat into meat
Add fistful brown sugar on top each rack
Cover/wrap tightly, meat side up, with foil
Bake at 300F for 4-5 hours. 4 hours usually enough.
Open foil wrap carefully to avoid steam
Drain and discard liquid/juice from pan
Smear ribs with BBQ sauce of your choice, including back of ribs, and reclose foil loosely
Bake for additional 15 minutes @ 300F
Open foil and bake for 15 minutes more, but don't let ribs dry out
Remove from oven
Cut into 3-4 rib segments to serve.
Serve with additional BBQ sauce and ENJOY!
Option - you may place ribs onto hot charcoal/gas grill for 4-6 min/side after smearing BBQ sauce onto
ribs, but they may break and stick to grill.

We were pleased to have The Rev. Deborah Brown presenting the sermon for the services yesterday. Rev. Brown is the Presiding Youth Missioner for the Diocese. Her sermon addressed the charge given us in the Gospel reading that we should not worry about our next meal, or what we will wear. However, she pointed out that there are many individuals today, specifically in our own community, who must worry about where their next meal is coming from, or the desperate situations that they find themselves facing. Her charge to us was that "We are the body of Christ." As such we should indeed not worry about our own needs, but attempt to reach out to those who must worry about the future they are facing.

WOMEN'S GROUP: Our next meeting will take place on Thursday, March 3rd in the library. At that time Nancy Lennox will present the "State of the Church". This will include an update on the plans for Church repair and renovation, the new outreach programs and the status of the clergy search. Please bring a sandwich and dessert and beverages will be provided.
BLANKET DRIVE: Sunday was the last official Sunday for the blanket drive. However, if you have not as yet made a contribution, please do so as soon as possible. Prior to yesterday's services, we had received enought funds for 214 blankets which was 58 blankets short of our last years' total of 282. A reminder that checks can be made out to Ellie Swarts.
SPAGHETTI DINNER: The Spaghetti Dinner is this coming Saturday, March 5th. As always, Patty Frasca is in need of individuals to assist in food preparation, serving and clean-up. PANCAKE SUPPER: In preparation for Lent, there will be a Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper held on Tuesday, March 8th from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm in the great hall. This event is hosted by the Ascension Men's Club. There is no charge for this supper but donations will be welcomed. CONCERTO CONCERT: Our organist and choir director, John Allegar, will be performing in a concerto concert of Eastman students at Sacred Heart Cathedral the evening of Tuesday, March 1st at 8 PM. Mark that date on your calendars to hear some wonderful performances.
ASH WEDNESDAY SERVICES: Services for Ash Wednesday, on March 9th will be held at 9 AM and 7:30 PM. The Eucharist and Imposition of Ashes will be offered at both services.

Matthew 17:1-9
17:1 Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and his brother John and led them up a high mountain, by themselves.
17:2 And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became dazzling white.
17:3 Suddenly there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him.
17:4 Then Peter said to Jesus, "Lord, it is good for us to be here; if you wish, I will make three dwellings here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah."
17:5 While he was still speaking, suddenly a bright cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud a voice said, "This is my Son, the Beloved; with him I am well pleased; listen to him!"
17:6 When the disciples heard this, they fell to the ground and were overcome by fear.
17:7 But Jesus came and touched them, saying, "Get up and do not be afraid."
17:8 And when they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus himself alone.
17:9 As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus ordered them, "Tell no one about the vision until after the Son of Man has been raised from the dead."
RECIPE: I decided it was time for a good vegetable recipe. This is one that can be used any time and works very well if you have to take a dish to a dinner. I use it alot in the summer when I have a large quantity of zucchini in the garden.
Zucchini Casserole
1 large zucchini, sliced
1 large onion, sliced
1 can cream of chicken soup
1 pint sour cream
1 bag bread stuffing mix
1 jar chopped pimento or 1 cup shredded carrot (for additional color)
1 stick butter
Fill a large kettle with water, add zucchini and onion slices, bring to a boil. Boil until vegetables are fork tender. Drain well.
Mix soup, sour cream and pimento or carrot.
In a 9x13 baking pan pour half of the bag of stuffing mix and spread evenly on the bottom. Melt the butter and pour half over the stuffing mix.
Spread the drained zucchini and onions over the stuffing.
Spread the soup and sour cream mixture over the vegetables.
Add the remaining stuffing mix spread evenly over the top.
Drizzle the remaining butter on top.
Bake at 350 degrees about 45 to 50 minutes, until top is brown and casserole is bubbling.

This week we will look at the beginnings of Jesus' ministry as he calls his first disciples. As our newly elected vestry members begin their ministry at Ascension we all could examine where our talents can be put to use for the glory of our Lord. During this time of transition at Ascension there are many areas of ministry that we can be called to fill.
The annual meeting of Church of the Ascension took place yesterday during and after the 10 AM service. At that time the following members of the congregation were elected: Nancy Lennox was elected Junior Warden. Henry (Hank) Eisemann, Patty Frasca and Diane Santiago were elected to serve three year vestry terms. Alice Eddy, Janice Nash and Linda VanAllen were elected to serve as Delegates to the Convention. Congratulations to all and thank you for your willingness to serve.
Please keep in your daily prayers all those in need of healing, and those who serve in our military forces. Kindly also pray for the candidates that have agreed to run for seats on the Vestry. We are blessed to have individuals willing to commit to the future growth of the Church of Ascension. To assist in our spiritual life, Forward Day by Day booklets are $.85 each in the back of the Church [Tower Room].
If we want to grow and share God's prosperity of faith, we must love God, love our friends and then speak openly to them. A congregation grows starting with each faithful person. God will help us share the Bread of Life.....God will help us live into our Baptismal Covenant of sharing His word and our lives and resources [which is the true Meaning of Life]. We never know how ready a friend may be to hear a word of encouragement in faith. We never know when God will bring someone to speak to us, and enrich our own life.
Thank you to those who gave of their time on Saturday morning to put the Christmas decorations in storage. With many helping hands, the job was done quickly and with good fellowship.
MAPLEWOOD CLERGY ASSOCIATION LEADERSHIP EVENT: The second in a series of leadership workshops sponsored by the Maplewood Clergy Association has been scheduled. Jan Wills attended the first workshop and found it very helpful. It would be nice if we could have a few others in attendance for this one. If you can attend, please let Jan Wills know 621-3900.
"Outreach Through Relationships: This workshop will help congregations initiate new ministries which touch the lives of persons in the community and touch the hearts of those involved. Such ministries are possible with a shoestring budget."
Ecumenical Leadership Training Event on Saturday, January 22nd, from 9:30a.m.-12:30 p.m. (Snow Date: Saturday, February 5th, 9:30-12:30) Wesley United Methodist Church,2009 Dewey Avenue (north of Ridge Road). Leader: Rev. Alan Newton, Executive Minister of American Baptist Churches of the Rochester Genesee Region. Rev. Newton is a gifted trainer with a deep commitment to the ministry of lay persons and developing missional churches. The opportunity to join with other leaders from sister Maplewood Edgerton Churches will make this even better!
The Ascension Women's Group will meet again on Thursday, February 3rd. Michael from Kittleberger's Florist will be demonstrating several different live and artificial floral arrangements to brighten our homes in anticipation of Spring. Lunch will be provided. The arrangements will be given away by drawing at the conclusion of the program. Please feel free to invite a friend.
CABIN FEVER: Stu and Gene Dennison announced their 4th annual Cabin Fever Party will take place on Saturday, February 5th at 4 PM. This is always a wonderful event and great fun. If you are planning to attend, please let Stu and Gene know or put your name on the sign-up sheet in the Narthex.
Next year will be the 125th Anniversary of the founding and of the ministry of Ascension. In preparation, let us draw closer to God - and partake of the power and blessing of the Holy Spirit to counsel, energize and sustain us all.. We honor our long history, but it is our future that must command our attention and energy.

I am not including a musical reference this week as John had to cancel the choir rehearsal on Wed. due to the bad weather. I am therefore unsure of the musical offerings for next week. I am sure the music chosen will be well worth your attendance in the congregation next Sunday.

Matthew 4:12-23
4:12 Now when Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew to Galilee.
4:13 He left Nazareth and made his home in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali,
4:14 so that what had been spoken through the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled:
4:15 "Land of Zebulun, land of Naphtali, on the road by the sea, across the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles
4:16 the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned."
4:17 From that time Jesus began to proclaim, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near."
4:18 As he walked by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea for they were fishermen.
4:19 And he said to them, "Follow me, and I will make you fish for people."
4:20 Immediately they left their nets and followed him.
4:21 As he went from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John, in the boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets, and he called them.
4:22 Immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed him.4:23 Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and curing every disease and every sickness among the people.
RECIPE: If you have a favorite recipe you would like to share, please forward it to me and I will see that it is included in a future issue. This recipe makes a great Sunday dinner. Leftovers can be used to make hot pork sandwiches with gravy.
BARBECUED PORK ROAST
1 - 3 lb. lion of pork
1 envelope onion soup mix
1/2 c. Casino or Catalina Salad Dressing
1 Tbsp. prepared mustard (I prefer Webbers Horseradish Mustard)
1 cup hot water.
Place the pork roast in a Dutch Oven or deep roasting pan. Mix last 4 ingredients and pour over the roast. Roast at 325 degrees for 2 to 2 1/2 hours or until internal temperature of roast is 160 to 170 degrees. Check during roasting and add additional water if needed to keep at least an inch of drippings in the pan. Remove roast from pan. Add 2 cups of water to drippings. Mix 2 heaping tablespoons of flour with water. Bring drippings to a boil and add the flour mixture and wisk until smooth and thickened. Serve with boiled potatoes or noodles. This gravy is especially flavorful. An excellent side dish is cinnamon applesauce (homemade if available).
