Remembering All the Saints

Dear Friends, November 7, 2011

Yesterday, many placed photos of loved ones on the altar, in remembrance for All Saints' Day. Rev. Pat, in her sermon, called to mind themes for All Saints' Day and from the Beatitudes, teaching us that we are one in the Spirit of God with our loved ones who have gone on before. Jesus' teachings in the Beatitudes gathered together a vision of Heaven and also what we are to do daily. We are to share His vision of a loving world with all whom we meet.
Come and gather 'round, as scripture comes to life..
You will be lifted up and rewarded.
[ DON'T FORGET THE MEETING THIS EVENING IN LIBRARY AT 7 FOR ALL PARISHIONERS]

We are off to busy and energetic times with Rev. Pat.

If we wish to grow in faith and knowledge, and share our love of God, we need to be able to share the stories of the Bible. Thursday Bible Study is in the Library at 9 AM. Please 'Come and See'. This is a time for reflection on Jesus’ teachings and how we model our faith to family, friends and all whom we meet. God’s Word guides such a process. Much food for thought and often refreshments to share. The study is of the Gospel Lesson for next Sunday, found below.

The Rochester Interfaith Jail Ministry asks your ongoing help - by donating through United Way or directly by check to R.I.J.M., 2 Riverside St., Rochester, NY 14613. This will bring books of healing and group sessions to those needing to start lives anew. Remember the Good Samaritan... Please answer this call. To volunteer, call 254-6790. The invitation to help is ongoing, so you are not late to the party! Many Thanks! Please include this ministry in your daily devotions.

Jesus, we never know when you will come again. Help us as we visit those in
prison and jail to remember that we must act every day as though we are to meet you face to face that night. Help us to remember that these are our brothers and sisters and help us to bring them the good news that there is a place for them in your Church and later on in your Heaven. We pray today especially for Step by Step of Rochester as they welcome Margie Mayk back to work.

WISH LIST Can you help or do you know someone who might help? Call Rev. Pat., please.

* Small grand piano or high quality upright or studio piano for the church, to assist in worship.

* Household items/furnishings in good condition to assist in our ministry.

When we see new people on Sunday or at an event,

Let's introduce ourselves and make them welcome. An invitation to Coffee Hour is a
great icebreaker. So is sitting with a new person and guiding her/him in the service,
if this is a first or second time with us. We never know when we may entertain angels unaware.

Do you have a pocket card to hand to a friend who asks where you go to church?
These cards are on the table in the back of the church. Please take a few and be ready to share.
We have some pocket crosses, also, in the drawer for anyone who answers the call to "Come and See".

This is all part of the Growing Season of God.

Every season offers beautiful music. Here is a bonus of music for All Saints' Day:

If you have a new or better email address for yourself, or know someone who might like to receive this weekly e-letter, please send in that information. If you would like other kinds of information, or have any suggestions for this e-letter, please give me a shout. Thanks!

With autumn providing so much wonderful produce, here is a recipe for a savory Mushroom

Barley Risotto. [We can also make extra for someone.]

Mushroom Barley Risotto
Yield: 4 servings
Prep Time: 15 minutes | Cook Time: 45 minutes
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 cup chopped yellow onion
12 ounces cleaned and sliced crimini mushrooms
3 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
1 tablespoon chopped fresh thyme
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 cup pearl barley
6 cups vegetable broth
1 tablespoon unsalted butter
½ cup parmesan cheese, shredded
1. Heat the olive oil in a large, heavy-bottomed saucepan over medium heat. Saute onion until it starts to brown, about 5 minutes.
2. Add the mushrooms and saute until they have released all of their liquid and are golden brown, about 10 minutes. You can add 1 to 3 tablespoons of water if they start to stick.
3. Stir in the herbs and garlic, then add the barley and stir to coat for 1 minute. Add 4 cups of the broth and bring to a boil over high heat.
4. Cook for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until most of the liquid is absorbed. Reduce the heat to medium and add more broth, ½ cup at a time, stirring until each addition is absorbed, until the barley is tender but still slightly firm. You may not use all of the broth, but you will use most of it.
5. Remove the pan from the heat and add the butter and cheese, stirring until incorporated. Season with salt and pepper, to taste.

Matthew 25:14-30
Jesus said, "For it is as if a man, going on a journey, summoned his slaves and entrusted his property to them; to one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away. The one who had received the five talents went off at once and traded with them, and made five more talents. In the same way, the one who had the two talents made two more talents. But the one who had received the one talent went off and dug a hole in the ground and hid his master's money. After a long time the master of those slaves came and settled accounts with them. Then the one who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five more talents, saying, `Master, you handed over to me five talents; see, I have made five more talents.' His master said to him, `Well done, good and trustworthy slave; you have been trustworthy in a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master.' And the one with the two talents also came forward, saying, `Master, you handed over to me two talents; see, I have made two more talents.' His master said to him, `Well done, good and trustworthy slave; you have been trustworthy in a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master.' Then the one who had received the one talent also came forward, saying, `Master, I knew that you were a harsh man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you did not scatter seed; so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here you have what is yours.' But his master replied, `You wicked and lazy slave! You knew, did you, that I reap where I did not sow, and gather where I did not scatter? Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers, and on my return I would have received what was my own with interest. So take the talent from him, and give it to the one with the ten talents. For to all those who have, more will be given, and they will have an abundance; but from those who have nothing, even what they have will be taken away. As for this worthless slave, throw him into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

ALL BAPTIZED CHRISTIANS ARE INVITED TO RECEIVE THE HOLY COMMUNION

LORD, LET US PRAY AND WORK TO HEAR YOUR WORD, CHANGE OUR HEARTS
AND GO FORTH TO DO YOUR WILL, EMPOWERED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT

Dear Friends, October 31, 2011

Yesterday, Bob Crystal preached and offered insights into our human tendency to be judgmental, as we listen to our inner voice of criticizing others. Bob related his firm conviction that we all have a place in the hereafter; and no one but God in Christ can direct us there, nor can anyone keep us out. So our little voices of criticism need to be redirected to helping others, because God has said "You are IN" - and "What are you going to do about it?"

Come and gather 'round, as scripture comes to life..

Jesus, we all struggle with wanting respect. Many of those we visit have gotten in trouble because they felt “dissed.” You told us not to strive for recognition from others. Help us to model that for those in jail and prison. Help us to show others how to be truly humble and to be servants, out of love for you; not to obey the law but fulfill it in your name.

Matthew 25:1-13
Jesus said, "Then the kingdom of heaven will be like this. Ten bridesmaids took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. When the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them; but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps. As the bridegroom was delayed, all of them became drowsy and slept. But at midnight there was a shout, `Look! Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.' Then all those bridesmaids got up and trimmed their lamps. The foolish said to the wise, `Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.' But the wise replied, `No! there will not be enough for you and for us; you had better go to the dealers and buy some for yourselves.' And while they went to buy it, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went with him into the wedding banquet; and the door was shut. Later the other bridesmaids came also, saying, `Lord, lord, open to us.' But he replied, `Truly I tell you, I do not know you.' Keep awake therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour."

ALL BAPTIZED CHRISTIANS ARE INVITED TO RECEIVE THE HOLY COMMUNION

LORD, LET US PRAY AND WORK TO HEAR YOUR WORD, CHANGE OUR HEARTS
AND GO FORTH TO DO YOUR WILL, EMPOWERED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT

Dear Friends, October 17, 2011

This year our Stewardship theme is "I Believe", and Rev. Pat taught us yesterday that to foster growth we need to love and nurture one another in God's Spirit. As Moses led his people while caring for them, that is what we shall do to share our time and talents and resources, as we grow in stewardship and in walking together into what is now unknown.

Come and gather 'round, as scripture comes to life..
You will be lifted up and rewarded.
We are off to busy and energetic times with Rev. Pat.

This season of Stewardship is when we decide what we wish to become. God asks each of us to reexamine our response to His work. Please lift up your personal generosity this season, recommit to a greater place for God's work, and invite the risen Christ into your life, home and heart. As we pray after communion, 'Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you...'. The prosperity of God awaits us, for the asking.

Kindly keep in your daily prayers all those in need of healing, those who serve in our military forces and those who travel.

Please include this ministry in your daily devotions:
Brother Jesus, You said to render to Caesar, but we ask for the grace to see
Caesar’s coin in all aspects of our lives; we want control when it is not ours, we want respect we do not need, we want approval when it is not necessary. Help us to resist the World in our own selves, and make ourselves more like You. We pray today for those whose ministry is unknown to the rest of us. We pray for the person who goes into the jails and prisons alone to answer Your call. We also pray for the Judicial Process Commission, that they may find the funding they need to continue their work.

WISH LIST Can you help? Do you know someone who might help? Call Rev. Pat., please.

* Small grand piano or high quality upright or studio piano for the church, to assist in worship.

* Household items/furnishings in good condition to assist in our ministry.

There is God's work for each of us when we see new people on Sunday or at an event.

Let's introduce ourselves and make them welcome. An invitation to Coffee Hour is a
great icebreaker. So is sitting with a new person and guiding her/him in the service, if this is a first or second time with us.

Every season offers beautiful music to lift our hearts . Here is a version of Ubi Caritas - where there is love, God is also there. This in reference to the Gospel lesson on the Two Great Commandments.

If you have a new or better email address for yourself, or know someone

With autumn providing a bounty of produce, here is a recipe for Jessica's Ham & Beans

offer a complete protein.

Jessica's Ham & Beans and Cornbread
The ham and beans recipe is:

1 pound dry great Northern beans

1/2 pound cooked ham, diced [or omit ham]

1 small onion, diced

1/2 cup brown sugar

salt and pepper to taste

1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper

1 tablespoon dried parsley
Rinse beans in a large pot; discard shriveled beans and any small stones. Add 8 cups of cold water. Let stand overnight or at least 8 hours. Drain and rinse beans.

Return beans to pot and add ham, onion, brown sugar, salt, pepper, cayenne and parsley and water to cover. Bring to a boil; reduce heat and simmer 1 1/2 to 2 hours, until beans are tender. Add more water if necessary during cooking time.

As Alternative, put the beans etc. in slow cooker on low for 8-12 hours.

The cornbread recipe is:

Sweet Cornbread

1 c. flour

1 c. yellow cornmeal

2/3 c. sugar [or less]

1 tsp. salt

2 tsp. baking powder

2 eggs

1 cup milk

1/3 c. plus 2 tsp. vegetable oil

1 tsp. vanilla
Preparation:

In a small bowl, soak 1 c. cornmeal in 1 c. milk for 15 minutes without stirring. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Cooking-spray a 9 to 12 inch round pan (use cast iron, if available, for even heating). In large bowl, combine flour, sugar, salt and baking powder with whisk. Stir in eggs, cornmeal and milk mixture, vegetable oil, and vanilla. Batter will be slightly lumpy. Pour into prepared pan and bake in preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into center of cornbread comes out clean.

This week's Gospel Lesson from

Matthew 22:34-46
When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together, and one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. "Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?" He said to him, "`You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.' This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: `You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets."
Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them this question: "What do you think of the Messiah? Whose son is he?" They said to him, "The son of David." He said to them, "How is it then that David by the Spirit calls him Lord, saying,

`The Lord said to my Lord,
"Sit at my right hand,
until I put your enemies under your feet"'?
If David thus calls him Lord, how can he be his son?" No one was able to give him an answer, nor from that day did anyone dare to ask him any more questions.

Ascension Celebrates it 125th Anniversary on Sunday

ALL BAPTIZED CHRISTIANS ARE INVITED TO RECEIVE THE HOLY COMMUNION

LORD, LET US PRAY AND WORK TO HEAR YOUR WORD, CHANGE OUR HEARTS
AND GO FORTH TO DO YOUR WILL, EMPOWERED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT

Dear Friends, September 26, 2011

I hope you are enjoying summer's final weeks, keeping up with prayers and doing God's work daily.
Please be sure to read the faith story in the Gospel lesson at the end of this e-letter.

Please plan to attend the service of Blessing of the Animals on Saturday, October 1 at 5:00. Even if you don't have a pet, this is a wondrous event and the animals seem to know what is happening! And, the next day, October 2, there will be no 8:00 service as we will be celebrating Ascension's 125th anniversary immediately following the 10:00 service. A scrumptious luncheon will follow! If you have not made your reservations, please call the office TODAY and leave message, including your name and the number of people who will be attending with you. $10 per person. Thanks!

Our sexton, Angel Perez, has informed the Wardens that the doors to the outside, as well as some interior doors, are not being locked after people leave. This is a security must and if you are the last one out, or if you think you are, please lock all doors that you used. Thank you.

Yesterday, Rev. Pat prepared a special selection of readings to highlight the meaning of the Ascension, so that we may next week celebrate our Anniversary more meaningfully. We also did some sketching of ideas for the East Wall decor, an ongoing exercise.

Come and gather 'round, as scripture comes to life..
You will be lifted up and rewarded.

We are off to a busy and energetic year with Rev. Pat.
You are personally important to help write our next chapters!
Please make your personal commitment to be present in person on Sunday mornings -
to give Pat your ongoing Welcome, to support her and to share in the promise and fulfillment
of the ministries, old and new, that are to be ours and hers.

God will help us share the Bread of Life.....God will help us live into our Baptismal Covenant of sharing His word and our lives and resources.
We never know how ready a friend may be to hear a word of encouragement in faith. We never know when God will bring someone to speak to us, to enrich our own life and the life of that person.
Be on the lookout, and ready to share your faith story.

Matthew 21:33-46
Jesus said, "Listen to another parable. There was a landowner who planted a vineyard, put a fence around it, dug a wine press in it, and built a watchtower. Then he leased it to tenants and went to another country. When the harvest time had come, he sent his slaves to the tenants to collect his produce. But the tenants seized his slaves and beat one, killed another, and stoned another. Again he sent other slaves, more than the first; and they treated them in the same way. Finally he sent his son to them, saying, `They will respect my son.' But when the tenants saw the son, they said to themselves, `This is the heir; come, let us kill him and get his inheritance.' So they seized him, threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him. Now when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?" They said to him, "He will put those wretches to a miserable death, and lease the vineyard to other tenants who will give him the produce at the harvest time."
Jesus said to them, "Have you never read in the scriptures:
`The stone that the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone;
this was the Lord's doing,
and it is amazing in our eyes'?
Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people that produces the fruits of the kingdom. The one who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; and it will crush anyone on whom it falls."
When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard his parables, they realized that he was speaking about them. They wanted to arrest him, but they feared the crowds, because they regarded him as a prophet.

Matthew 20:1-16

Jesus said, "The kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard. After agreeing with the laborers for the usual daily wage, he sent them into his vineyard. When he went out about nine o'clock, he saw others standing idle in the marketplace; and he said to them, `You also go into the vineyard, and I will pay you whatever is right.' So they went. When he went out again about noon and about three o'clock, he did the same. And about five o'clock he went out and found others standing around; and he said to them, `Why are you standing here idle all day?' They said to him, `Because no one has hired us.' He said to them, `You also go into the vineyard.' When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his manager, `Call the laborers and give them their pay, beginning with the last and then going to the first.' When those hired about five o'clock came, each of them received the usual daily wage. Now when the first came, they thought they would receive more; but each of them also received the usual daily wage. And when they received it, they grumbled against the landowner, saying, `These last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat.' But he replied to one of them, `Friend, I am doing you no wrong; did you not agree with me for the usual daily wage? Take what belongs to you and go; I choose to give to this last the same as I give to you. Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or are you envious because I am generous?' So the last will be first, and the first will be last."
